Newly appointed Kenyatta University Vice-Chancellor Prof John Okumu has vowed to spearhead reforms aimed at transforming the institution into a stronger centre of academic excellence, research, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Prof Okumu, who recently took over the leadership of the university, brings to the position more than three decades of experience at Kenyatta University, having joined the institution in 1988 as a Tutorial Fellow and steadily risen through the academic and administrative ranks.

Over the years, he has served in various academic and leadership positions, including Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs, giving him extensive experience in university management, academic administration, teaching, research and institutional development.

A professor of physics specialising in condensed matter physics, Prof Okumu has built an extensive academic career while contributing to the growth of the university's teaching and research programmes. His long experience within the institution is expected to give him an in-depth understanding of its operations, challenges and opportunities.

His appointment followed a competitive recruitment process in which he emerged as the top-ranked candidate.

Speaking after assuming office, Prof Okumu said his administration would focus on strengthening the quality of teaching and learning while creating an environment that enables students and staff to realise their full potential.

He said the university must remain responsive to the changing needs of society and the job market by embracing innovation, technology and skills development.

Prof Okumu also pledged to strengthen research and innovation, saying universities have a critical role to play in generating knowledge and developing solutions to challenges facing the country.

He said his administration would work closely with academic and non-academic staff, students and other stakeholders to address challenges facing the institution and improve service delivery.

Drawing on his long experience at the university, Prof Okumu said he would prioritise teamwork, consultation and inclusivity in running the institution, noting that sustainable transformation requires the participation of all stakeholders.

He further called on staff and students to support his administration as it seeks to strengthen Kenyatta University's reputation nationally and internationally.

His appointment comes at a time when Kenyan universities are grappling with financial pressures, changing student needs and growing demand for graduates equipped with skills relevant to the modern economy.

With his extensive institutional experience and background in academia and university administration, Prof Okumu is expected to use his tenure to position Kenyatta University for greater academic competitiveness while improving the overall experience of students and staff.
