Huawei Highlights FusionSolar Opportunity in Africa’s Energy Transition

Huawei Kenya Deputy CEO for Public Affairs James Sun Quan has highlighted the growing opportunity for FusionSolar, saying the integration of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology with battery energy storage could play a critical role in Africa’s transition to clean, reliable and affordable energy.
Speaking during the Kenya Energy Transition Forum, Sun said solar PV combined with battery energy storage systems (BESS) provides a major opportunity for Sub-Saharan Africa to expand renewable-energy capacity while addressing challenges associated with power reliability and intermittency.

He said Huawei FusionSolar brings together solar generation, energy storage and intelligent energy-management technologies, allowing electricity generated during the day to be stored and used when demand increases.
Sun noted that the solution can support different applications, including utility-scale projects, commercial and industrial facilities, microgrids and other distributed energy systems.

He said the growing demand for reliable electricity presents an opportunity for African businesses and investors to adopt solar-plus-storage systems to reduce dependence on diesel generators and manage energy costs.

According to Sun, battery storage will become increasingly important as African countries increase their reliance on renewable energy, allowing excess solar power to be captured during periods of high generation and deployed during peak demand.

He said Africa should take advantage of its abundant solar resources while investing in technologies that can make renewable energy more reliable and flexible.

Sun also stressed the importance of collaboration among governments, private-sector players, technology companies and investors in accelerating deployment of clean-energy technologies.

For Kenya, the expansion of solar PV and BESS could complement the country’s strong renewable-energy base while supporting businesses and communities that require reliable power.

The FusionSolar approach, he said, demonstrates how digital technology, renewable generation and energy storage can work together to create smarter and more resilient energy systems.

As Africa continues to pursue energy security and climate goals, Sun said solar-plus-storage solutions such as FusionSolar could unlock new investment opportunities while helping the continent move towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
