Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga has urged Kenyans to embrace the Boma Yangu platform, saying it is making home ownership more accessible by providing a transparent and affordable pathway to owning a house.
Speaking during a press briefing, Hinga said the digital platform enables Kenyans to register for the Affordable Housing Programme, monitor their savings, view available housing projects and apply for homes from anywhere in the country.
He said one of the programme's biggest achievements has been reducing the cost of home ownership by removing the cost of land from the price of houses. According to Hinga, the government is using public land held in trust for citizens, allowing affordable housing units to be sold at prices that many low- and middle-income earners can afford.
"The biggest challenge to home ownership has always been the cost of land. By taking away that cost, we are giving thousands of Kenyans a realistic opportunity to own decent homes," Hinga said. He noted that an acre of land in Nairobi's Upper Hill can cost as much as KSh1.2 billion, making privately developed homes unaffordable for most Kenyans.
The PS said the programme also offers affordable financing, allowing buyers to pay through manageable monthly instalments instead of expensive commercial mortgages. He added that this extends home ownership opportunities to ordinary Kenyans who previously had little chance of accessing affordable financing.
Hinga said thousands of families have already occupied completed Affordable Housing projects, including Mukuru, Park Road, Shauri Moyo B, Starehe in Nairobi and Buxton Point in Mombasa, while many more developments are under construction across the country.
He encouraged more Kenyans to register on the Boma Yangu platform using their national ID and KRA PIN or by dialing *832# to create an account, track their contributions and apply for available housing units.
Hinga said the Affordable Housing Programme is not only expanding home ownership but is also creating jobs, stimulating economic growth and improving the quality of life for thousands of Kenyan families.
