Elijah Mwangi is increasingly emerging as a key driver of reforms and support initiatives aimed at transforming Kenya’s sports sector, particularly for athletes in emerging disciplines who have long struggled without recognition or funding. While congratulating buzzing skating sensation Kelvin Kiarie at his Talanta Plaza office, the Sports Principal Secretary pledged government support to the young athlete, who recently won gold and silver medals in roller skating at the International Skating Challenge in Benin. Mwangi emphasized the importance of athletes in emerging sports formally registering as sportsmen and women to overcome challenges caused by non-compliant federations and gain access to government support systems.
Kiarie had earlier sparked national debate after it emerged that he travelled to the international competition without sponsorship or government support despite representing Kenya. His journey and eventual gold medal triumph drew widespread praise from Kenyans online, many questioning why athletes in emerging sports continue to struggle for recognition and financial backing even after delivering international success.
The PS noted that Kiarie’s achievement in roller skating had exposed the immense untapped talent existing outside Kenya’s traditional sporting disciplines. He said the government is now keen on ensuring athletes in sports such as skating, boxing, rugby, volleyball, and martial arts receive equal opportunities, exposure, and institutional support.
Mwangi’s recent engagements form part of broader reforms aimed at making sports more inclusive and sustainable. He has also been pushing for stronger sports policies, improved federation accountability, and expansion of sports infrastructure to nurture grassroots talent across the country.
His intervention in Kiarie’s case has been viewed as a bold step toward recognizing and supporting athletes in non-traditional sports who continue to raise Kenya’s profile internationally despite facing financial and institutional challenges.
