Kenya is accelerating its vision to become a leading international aviation hub, with transformative upgrades at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and strategic developments at Wilson Airport. These initiatives aim to boost global connectivity, trade, tourism, and the country’s overall aviation ecosystem.
Principal Secretary for Aviation and Aerospace Development, Teresia Mbaika, emphasized that JKIA’s modernization is more than infrastructure. “JKIA is not just an airport; it is a gateway to Kenya’s economic growth. A modern, efficient airport will attract international airlines, enhance passenger experience, and improve cargo handling, positioning Nairobi as a key transit hub for Africa and beyond,” she said. The airport’s 20-year masterplan will expand capacity, integrate advanced facilities, and strengthen regional and international airline operations.

Wilson Airport complements this vision by enhancing domestic and regional connectivity, supporting Canadian-made aircraft operated by local carriers such as Skyward Express, Safarilink, ALS, and Jambo Jet, which operates a full fleet of 10 Canadian aircraft.
As part of deepening bilateral partnerships, PS Mbaika hosted H.E. Joshua Tabah, High Commissioner of Canada, to discuss collaboration on aviation training and technical expertise. The discussions included plans to train 2,000 aircraft maintenance engineers and establish an international aviation training facility in Nairobi, in partnership with the Kenyan Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA).
Other participants included the Trade Commissioner from the Canadian High Commission, JKIA and Wilson Airport managers Rose Koross and Selina Gor, KAA General Manager Eng. Meshack Ochieng, Maggie Campbell from the Executive Office, and senior officials from the State Department.
PS Mbaika noted that the modernization of JKIA and Wilson Airport, combined with strategic international partnerships, will strengthen Kenya’s competitiveness in global aviation, drive economic growth, and establish Nairobi as a premier gateway to Africa.
