PS Hinga Unveils Gikomba Market Redevelopment with Plan To Trader Compensation and Infrastructure Upgrades

The Principal Secretary for Lands and Housing, Charles Hinga, has announced the government’s plans to transform Gikomba Market into a modern, safe, and internationally competitive trading hub under the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting, PS Hinga said the redevelopment will minimize disruption to traders’ livelihoods. A compensation package has been provided for traders temporarily relocated to designated decanting sites while construction progresses. The upgraded market will feature structured trading spaces, proper sanitation, clean water, waste management, and safety facilities. Roads and drainage systems around the market will be improved, along with footpaths and motorized and non-motorized bridges, to enhance accessibility for all.
Highlighting Gikomba’s regional significance, PS Hinga noted that the market attracts traders from Uganda, Tanzania, and other parts of East Africa. “When complete, this market will serve not only Nairobi but the entire region,” he said, emphasizing that modern facilities will attract more customers and improve trading conditions.

Traders’ chairman Boka Sabat welcomed the initiative, praising the government for its proactive approach. “The temporary relocation has been handled professionally, and we are confident that the modernized market will benefit all traders,” he said, expressing optimism about increased business opportunities and safer working conditions.
The Nairobi County Government also supported the project, noting that collaboration with the national government and traders ensures an inclusive and sustainable development. Officials added that the investment will restore the Nairobi River ecosystem, strengthen economic activity, and create cleaner, safer public spaces.

In addition, the project includes youth-focused facilities at Park Fuji, including football pitches, basketball and boxing facilities, a community center, and an amphitheater.
Once completed, the redevelopment is expected to transform Gikomba into a resilient, organized, and vibrant commercial hub, driving Nairobi’s economy and strengthening regional trade while serving future generations.
