The Kenya Extended Producer Responsibility Organization has underscored the critical role of the media in advancing environmental accountability as Kenya moves into full enforcement of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations.
Speaking during a high-level media breakfast at the Sarova Stanley Hotel, KEPRO CEO James Odongo said the organization is working closely with producers to strengthen compliance and build a sustainable waste management ecosystem.

Since its establishment in 2021, KEPRO has grown into the country’s largest Producer Responsibility Organization in the non-hazardous packaging sector, supporting over 1,400 companies nationwide. The organization has also mobilized more than KES 300 million toward recycling efforts and facilitated the recovery of over 100,000 metric tonnes of packaging waste.
With the implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility Regulations 2024 under the oversight of the National Environment Management Authority, businesses are now required to register, declare packaging volumes, and finance waste recovery systems or face regulatory sanctions.
A panel featuring stakeholders from government, media, and industry emphasized that many compliance gaps stem from limited awareness, not resistance. Participants called for accurate, consistent, and solutions-driven reporting to demystify EPR and promote responsible consumption.

Journalists at the forum committed to strengthening coverage of sustainability issues, signaling a renewed push to use media as a tool for public awareness and accountability in Kenya’s transition to a circular economy.
