Lake Victoria Ring Road Set to Unlock Kenya’s Blue Economy by 2030”

The Lake Victoria Ring Road is a transformative 450 km infrastructure project aimed at unlocking Kenya’s Blue Economy by improving access to Lake Victoria’s shores for fishing, tourism, and trade. The highway starts at Busia on the Uganda border, traverses Busia, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, and Migori counties, and ends at Muhuru Bay on the Tanzania border.

Time Frame: The project is planned to be completed in phases. Initial segments, such as the Rusinga Island Ring Road, were completed by 2025. Construction on the remaining stretches is ongoing, with full completion targeted between 2028 and 2030, depending on funding and technical progress.

Funding and Support: The project receives financial and technical assistance from the World Bank and the African Development Bank, with additional government allocations to expedite construction.

Economic Impact: The road will facilitate faster transport of fish and agricultural produce, enhance eco‑tourism, promote cross‑border trade with Uganda and Tanzania, and create jobs along the corridor.

President William Ruto has emphasised that the Lake Victoria Ring Road is a priority for the East African community.

He noted that its phased implementation is designed to ensure sections become operational as they are completed, allowing local communities to benefit immediately. Ruto highlighted the highway’s strategic role in linking counties, boosting trade, and positioning the region as a hub for the Blue Economy, stressing that timely completion will accelerate national development goals.
