Half a Million Leaders Elected as United Democratic Alliance Completes Historic Grassroots Polls

The nationwide call for registered UDA members to elect their local leadership has delivered remarkable results.
Across counties in Kenya, the exercise mobilized massive participation, leading to the election of officials who genuinely reflect the will of grassroots members.
The Deputy President of Kenya,Kithure Kindiki,
has hailed the ongoing grassroots elections of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) as a powerful demonstration of internal democracy and member-driven leadership.

The Deputy President described the exercise as one of the largest grassroots political mobilizations in the country’s history, emphasizing that the process reflects the party’s commitment to empowering ordinary members.
“A strong political party cannot be built from boardrooms or elite circles. It must grow from polling stations, villages and wards where citizens live and participate,” he noted.

Despite early challenges—including registration delays, the KSh 200 aspirant fee barrier for some candidates, and low contestant numbers in some areas—the party opted to repeat elections where necessary to guarantee fairness and inclusivity.

The outcome has been significant: over half a million grassroots party officials have been elected nationwide.

These officials—drawn from polling stations across the country—form the party’s most vital network. They embody the belief that strong political movements are built from the grassroots upward, not from elite corridors of power.
Elected directly by fellow members, they carry the legitimacy to champion the party’s manifesto, communicate government achievements, and mobilize support in villages, wards, and community forums.
Strengthening the Grassroots Through Training

Following the elections, the party quickly moved to empower these leaders through training programs focused on the party’s manifesto, values, and governance agenda under President William Ruto.

Equipped with knowledge and organizational skills, these grassroots leaders now serve as the party’s frontline communicators—turning every polling station into a hub for civic engagement and bottom-up transformation.
A Clear Democratic Ladder: From Grassroots to National Leadership

With the grassroots phase largely completed—alongside repeat polls where necessary—UDA has laid out a structured pathway for leadership progression:
Grassroots / Polling Station Level – Foundation established with elected officials (often 20 per station).

Ward-Level Elections – Grassroots leaders elect ward representatives.

Constituency-Level Elections – Constituency officials chosen from ward leaders.

County-Level Elections – County leadership teams formed.

National Party Elections in Nairobi – Final stage where top party leadership will be elected.

This system ensures every leadership tier reflects the genuine voice of members from the ground up.

Overcoming Challenges to Deliver Inclusive Democracy

The process faced logistical hurdles—including polling station delays, late gadget deliveries, transport challenges in remote areas, and occasional digital glitches.

However, the party implemented swift solutions such as extended voting hours, manual backup registers, and rapid logistical support to ensure the process remained inclusive and credible.

According to the Deputy President, these were the growing pains of genuine internal democracy, emphasizing that the party deliberately prioritized fairness and participation over speed.
From over half a million elected grassroots officials to a structured pathway toward national leadership, UDA’s internal elections represent more than a party exercise. They signal a deliberate effort to build a people-driven political movement rooted in grassroots participation and long-term national transformation.
