Former Mwea MP Peter Njuguna Gitau and 4 othera have been implicated in a high-profile vehicle theft investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), according to the agency’s official report. Detectives from the DCI’s Operation Support Unit (OSU) recovered two Isuzu lorries that were stolen from Gatanga in Murang’a County on 16 August 2025. The vehicles — an Isuzu FVZ (registration KDQ 845T) and an Isuzu FRR (registration KDL 078W) — were identified through meticulous investigative work by the unit, which tracked their movements following the reported theft.
DCI records state that during interrogation, the suspects — including Gitau and four others — led detectives to Makupa in Mombasa County, where both lorries were recovered. The agency noted that the vehicles had been fitted with counterfeit number plates in an effort to evade law enforcement, with the FVZ carrying a fake plate (KDV 449C) and the FRR a forged plate (KCA 505D). 
The recovered lorries are now in the custody of DCI Gatanga, and efforts are underway to return them to their rightful owners. In late January 2026, a Murang’a court granted Gitau and his co-suspects bail, rejecting a police bid to extend their detention on the grounds that formal charges had not yet been
